Topic:
“Bring Them Here to Me”: An Exegetical Reading of Matthew 14:18
Summary
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John report on the miracle of feeding the crowds with five loaves of bread and two fish by Jesus. All four evangelists share similar characteristic features in their accounts of the story about the multiplication of bread and fish to feed the large crowds. However, Matthew differs from the three others with the imperative statement: “Bring them here to Me” in his literary framework. As a unique insertion in Matthew’s account, the Greek pherete moi hōde autous (“Bring them here to Me”) may not be merely accidental but intentional and purposeful. This study argues that “Bring Them Here to Me” in Matthew 14:18 spans exegetical insights that enhance understanding about the bringing also of something more than physical bread and fish.
